Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, abbreviated NAD+, is a dinucleotide built from adenine, nicotinamide, two ribose sugars, and two phosphate groups. The oxidized form carries a positive charge on the nicotinamide ring, while the reduced form, NADH, is neutral. This pair acts as a reversible electron carrier in cells. NAD+ is present in bacteria, plants, animals, and fungi. Its structure allows it to accept and donate electrons without being consumed in the reactions it supports.
In redox reactions, NAD+ accepts a hydride ion, which consists of two electrons and one proton. The hydride adds to the nicotinamide ring at a specific carbon, converting NAD+ into NADH. Dehydrogenase enzymes use this step in glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and fatty acid oxidation. NADH later donates electrons to the mitochondrial electron transport chain, helping to drive ATP synthesis. The balance between NAD+ and NADH reflects the metabolic state of a cell, and shifts in that balance can alter how pathways operate.
NAD+ is a dinucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and adenine linked by phosphate groups. Its full name is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, with "+" denoting the oxidized form. The molecule acts as a coenzyme in redox reactions, cycling between NAD+ and NADH. In cells, it participates in electron transfer during glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. It is distinct from NADP+, which carries an additional phosphate group and supports different biosynthetic reactions.
Beyond redox chemistry, NAD+ serves as a substrate for enzymes that transfer ADP-ribose or remove acetyl groups. Sirtuins, PARPs, and CD38-family enzymes consume NAD+ and produce nicotinamide and ADP-ribose-related products. These reactions link NAD+ availability to DNA repair, chromatin modification, and cellular signaling. Because the molecule is central to energy metabolism and regulation, changes in its concentration are studied in aging, immunity, and metabolic research. The balance between synthesis and consumption varies by tissue, developmental stage, and physiological state.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Molar mass | 663.43 g/mol | For the free acid form; salts have higher mass. |
| Appearance | White to off-white powder | Often hygroscopic; may clump on exposure to air. |
| Solubility | Freely soluble in water | Poorly soluble in nonpolar organic solvents. |
| Typical storage | -20 °C, desiccated | Protect from light and moisture; avoid repeated freeze-thaw. |
| Common synonyms | beta-NAD, DPN | DPN stands for diphosphopyridine nucleotide, an older name. |
The stability of NAD+ depends on pH, temperature, light exposure, and the presence of degradative enzymes. Aqueous solutions are generally more stable under mildly acidic to neutral conditions and degrade faster under alkaline conditions or prolonged heat. The solid is hygroscopic and should be stored desiccated, often frozen, and protected from repeated freeze-thaw cycles. In laboratory handling, aliquots reduce repeated temperature changes, and chelating agents may limit metal-catalyzed hydrolysis in some buffers. These practices matter because even small amounts of NADH or hydrolysis products can interfere with quantitative assays.
Quality control for NAD+ materials typically combines identity, purity, and water content checks. Identity may be confirmed by ultraviolet spectrum, retention time in chromatography, or mass accuracy, while purity is assessed by HPLC peak area or quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance. Residual water and solvents can affect molar calculations and enzyme assays, so Karl Fischer titration or thermogravimetric analysis may be used. Commercial materials vary in grade and counterion form, and published methods should specify the exact salt or hydrate when reporting concentrations. Regulatory status depends on intended use, with research reagents, dietary ingredients, and clinical products treated under different frameworks.
Related compounds include NADH, the reduced form, and NADP+, which carries an additional phosphate group. NADP+ and NADPH often serve in biosynthetic and antioxidant reactions, while NAD+ and NADH are more associated with energy-yielding catabolism. Nicotinamide, nicotinic acid, and nicotinamide riboside are precursors that can enter salvage pathways. The exact contribution of dietary precursors to tissue NAD+ pools is an area of active investigation. Some studies measure labeled precursors to trace those routes.
NAD+ is the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a coenzyme built from two nucleotides joined by a phosphate linkage. One nucleotide carries adenine, and the other carries nicotinamide; the plus sign denotes a formal positive charge on the nicotinamide ring, not a free proton. In cells, NAD+ and its reduced partner NADH form a reversible redox pair. That pair participates in electron transfer reactions throughout metabolism. The abbreviation NAD+ is common in biochemistry, while NAD(H) sometimes denotes the combined pool.
The molecule was first described in the early twentieth century as a factor that promoted fermentation in yeast extracts. Later work linked it to hydrogen transfer and to the oxidation of nutrients in living tissues. Its structure was resolved as a dinucleotide, which explained why it could accept and donate electrons at specific enzyme sites. Today, NAD+ is recognized as a central substrate and signaling precursor, not merely a metabolic cofactor. Whether all observed NAD+ changes reflect causal signaling remains an open question.
=== La Canonja, Spain accident === On 14 January 2020 in an industrial estate near Tarragona, an explosion of an ethoxylation reactor owned by the chemical company Industrias Quimicas de Oxido de Etileno (IQOXE, part of the CL Industrial Group) occurred. The accident launched substantial debris over a radius of about two and a half kilometers, one piece penetrating a distant home and killing an occupant. It is reported that at least three people were killed and seven injured as a direct result of the explosion. The company was, until the time of the explosion the only producer of ethylene oxide in Spain with an installed capacity of 140,000 tons/year. Half of that production was used to manufacture ethylene glycol for PET production. The accident will be investigated under EU regulations within the context of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work.
Judah has written several books on the geopolitics of the Balkans, mainly focusing on Serbia and Kosovo.[a] Tony Judt (2 January 1948 – 6 August 2010) was a British-American historian, essayist and university professor of Russian Jewish and Romanian Jewish ancestry, who specialised in European history;in aftermath of the Six-Day War, Judt worked as a driver and translator for the Israel Defense Forces. After the war, Judt's belief in the Zionist enterprise began to unravel and he then called for the conversion of "Israel from a Jewish state to a binational one" that would include all of what is now Israel, Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank. Anthony Julius (born 16 July 1956) author of Trials of the Diaspora: A History of Anti-Semitism in England.Known for being Diana, Princess of Wales' divorce lawyer and for representing Deborah Lipstadt in trial against David Irving. Ann Jungman (born 1938) is an author of children's literature. She was born in Highgate, North London of German Jewish refugees. She studied Law at Exeter University before training as a primary school teacher. She founded Barn Owl Books in 1999, an independent publishing company that re-releases out-of-print children's books, publishing 8 books a year.
Ceruloplasmin is an acute phase protein synthesized in the liver. It is the carrier of the copper ion. Its level is increased in infections, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, non-Wilson liver disease and obstructive jaundice. In Wilson disease, the ceruloplasmin level is depressed which lead to copper accumulation in body tissues.

=== Muchik linguistic evidence and Moche consumption === During the pre-Columbian era, the Moche culture (or Mochica), which inhabited the northern coast of Peru, actively collected and consumed the fruits of Solanum pimpinellifolium. Unlike the common domesticated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), which lacks native names of Andean origin because its final domestication occurred in Mesoamerica, S. pimpinellifolium was integrated early into the local lexicon of the region. In the ancient Muchik language, the plant and its fruit were called faña (translated as "tender plant"), a designation recovered in modern philological research on the pre-Hispanic speech of the area.
==== Body composition and strength improvements ==== Anabolic steroids influence muscle fiber characteristics, affecting both the size and type of muscle fibers. This alteration significantly contributes to enhanced muscle strength and endurance. Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) cause these changes by directly impacting the muscle tissue's cellular components. Studies have shown that these changes are not merely superficial but represent a profound transformation in the muscle's structural and functional properties. This transformation is a key factor in the steroids' ability to enhance physical performance and endurance. Body weight in men may increase by 2 to 5 kg as a result of short-term (<10 weeks) AAS use, which may be attributed mainly to an increase of lean mass. Animal studies also found that fat mass was reduced, but most studies in humans failed to show significant fat mass decrements. The effects on lean body mass have been shown to be dose-dependent. Both muscle hypertrophy and the formation of new muscle fibers have been observed. The hydration of lean mass remains unaffected by AAS use, although small increments of blood volume cannot be ruled out. The upper region of the body (thorax, neck, shoulders, and upper arm) seems to be more susceptible for AAS than other body regions because of predominance of ARs in the upper body. The largest difference in muscle fiber size between AAS users and non-users was observed in type I muscle fibers of the vastus lateralis and the trapezius muscle as a result of long-term AAS self-administration.
In Table 1, "Name" refers to the common name of the reference, "Material" gives its chemical formula and phase, "Type of ratio" is the isotopic ratio reported in "Isotopic ratio", "δ" is the δ value of the material with indicated reference frame, "Type" is the category of the material using the notation of Gröening (2004) (discussed below), "Citation" gives the article(s) reporting the isotopic abundances on which the isotope ratio is based, and "Notes" are notes. The reported isotopic ratios reflect the results from individual analyses of absolute mass fraction, aggregated in Meija et al. (2016) and manipulated to reach the given ratios. Error was calculated as the square root of the sum of the squares of fractional reported errors, consistent with standard error propagation, but is not propagated for ratios reached through secondary calculation.

aid, though it was under the first five years of the Plan Colombia. In March 2015, it was revealed DEA agents were participating in drug cartel-funded sex parties with prostitutes. Agents were provided with expensive gifts, weapons, and money from drug cartel members. As a result, the head of the US Drug Enforcement Administration, Michele Leonhart, announced her retirement. According to the 2022 Truth Commission report, the 2019 arrest of Jesús Santrich on drug trafficking charges, which was a joint operation by the DEA and Colombian Attorney General Néstor Humberto Martínez, was intended to send a message from the Colombian Attorney General's to the Colombian public that the peace process had failed. Santrich's arrest led to hundreds of ex-guerrillas taking up arms again, which jeopardized the peace process.
Crocodile oil is extracted from the fatty tissues of crocodiles. Crocodile fat is a product of commercial farming, evident in Thailand. Historically, for centuries crocodile oil has been used by traditional practitioners across the globe, including Chinese traditional medicine, Southeast Asia, Ancient Egypt. Crocodile oil has been used since the nineteenth century for different purposes in different cultures. Due to the oil's components, its richness in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, it is sold as ointment for treatment of skin conditions, skin structure enhancement, collagen deposition, and medicine for illnesses. In recent times, the use of crocodile oil has invited criticism from the use of crocodile oil as there is an increased demand for cruelty-free and vegan-friendly beauty products in consumers of today's society.
One of the largest traditional markets in Taiwan, the Jianguo Market in Taichung, was torn down and replaced by a new facility in 2016. The new facilities provided better hygiene, disability accessibility, and refrigeration, but the relocation was initially met with hesitation from the local vendors before a grassroots outreach campaign led to greater acceptance.
==== History ==== All Sendai virus strains belong to the same serotype. The origin of many strains of SeV was described in 1978. Some strains such as Ohita and Hamamatsu were described later. Ohita and Hamanatsu strains were isolated from separate epidemics in laboratory mice. According to the personal memory of Alisa G. Bukrinskaya, who has co-authored numerous publications related to SeV along with Viktor M. Zhdanov, starting in 1961, the Moscow strain of SeV was obtained by Viktor M. Zhdanov of the Ivanovsky Institute of Virology from Japan in the late 1950s or early 1960s, It is reported that the BB1 strain derived from the Moscow virus strain. The strain BB1 was given to the researchers of Institute of Viral Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing, China by researchers of Ivanovsky Institute of Virology, Moscow, Russia in the 1960s.
=== Data entry === When an electronic CRF is in use, data entry is carried out at the investigative site where the clinical trial is conducted by site staff who have been granted appropriate access to do so. When using a paper CRF the pages are entered by data entry operators. Best practice is for a first pass data entry to be completed followed by a second pass or verification step by an independent operator. Any discrepancies between the first and second pass may be resolved such that the data entered is a true reflection of that recorded on the CRF. Where the operator is unable to read the entry the clinical data manager should be notified so that the entry may be clarified with the person who completed the CRF.

It indicates the oxidized form, which has a positive charge on the nicotinamide nitrogen. The reduced partner NADH lacks that charge and carries added electrons. The plus sign is part of the standard abbreviation, not a separate ion.
No. It also serves as a substrate for signaling and DNA-repair enzymes such as sirtuins and PARPs. Those reactions consume NAD+ and connect its availability to cellular regulation. Energy transfer remains its most abundant known role.
NAD+ is the oxidized electron acceptor, while NADH is the reduced electron carrier. They form a reversible redox pair and differ by a hydride ion. Cells maintain different ratios of the two depending on conditions and compartment.
The plus sign indicates the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, which can accept electrons. When it accepts electrons, it becomes NADH. The two forms together support redox reactions in cells.
